Best Free Vista Antivirus?

Submitted by admin on November 13, 2009 – 1:50 am19 Comments

Hi,
What is the best free Antivirus program for Vista.
It has to do the following:
Only scan when I ask it to, never run in the background when my computer is working in the task bar or anything. Only open when I ask it.

hello there, I would highly recommend AVG antivirus it is free, and is very efficient.
    Case study and download below

  • DRIFTIN says:

AVG, AVAST and AVIRA are all good free and paid for softwares and all are rated well.
If you want one that is for Vista 64 bit i would suggest you look at AVAST.
With any of them you can turn off Scheduled Scans, which would suit your purposes.
But if you want one that definitely wont scan automatically then use AVIRA.
Contrary to what others have written above AVIRA does provide you with Real Time protection even though it doesn’t use the traditional method of ‘Scheduled Scans’.
You can download any of these and other must have free security softwares from http://www.thehappypc.com.au
There is a software there for any virus/malware/trojan problem you can get.
    Good luck

there will never be a good Antivirus Program for Vista. XP. or windows 7 be it free or bought Until you fully understand that you will always have viruses Trojans, Malware and Spyware problems. After 26 yrs MS still can’t secure their operating system that should tell you something. Dump it and move to Linux it’s more secure, faster and a far superior operating system.
Big Businesses are jumping off windows like cats off a hot tin roof onto Linux

then try safety.live.com whenever you want to scan instead of installing antivirus. I assume you rarely connect to internet but there are other means by which virus and malware can attack your workstation so it is always good to have a installed antivirus and background scan.
If you do not want to buy an antivirus then try Windows Security Essentials, Indeed it is better than most paid Antivirus and best compatible with Vista( I was a big hater of Microsoft for long but recently I changed my mind and may be thats why it is still the biggest player above all) If essentials beta is not available then try avast,

  • Sravan says:

lots of free ones, but as has been already stated, why have one at all if you are not going to use it real time? The whole point is prevention not cure, also if you do get a virus, what is to say your scanner wont get corrupted and become unusable? Un-protected MS Windows (Vista, XP, anything) on the internet is just asking to get infected.

  • dublklik says:

Why do you even want one if it’s not going to protect you realtime? That doesn’t make any sense. Avast and Avira are great, but install only one of those. You can configure either one of those not to scan in realtime, but you will be leaving yourself wide open to attacks.
EDIT: AVG free has no rootkit protection and poor removal. I don’t know why anyone uses that.

  • Figbash says:

All of the following anti virus programs are free for personal use. All work very well, but my personal favorite is “Avast”.
Only run one anti virus program to avoid conflicts.
    AVGhttp://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/…
    Avasthttp://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_prot…
    Avria http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Pe…

  • Ron M says:

    avast or avira
both have better virus detection rate than avg and the rest of the free programs
why dont you want it running in the background, have them turned off will not offer you real time protection therefore viruses will not be detected til you scan manually and by that time it might have totally messed your com up

  • combat18 says:

Definately Avira(it’s free), it has 99.7% detection rates, heres the download.http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-P…
    Heres the detection rates,http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/st…
go to page 10 to see the detection rates

  • Evan T says:

    For your Anti-Virus……(Always use only 1 A-V)
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of “paid-for” anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer’s resources. And did I mention that it’s free!
    Download here:http://www.free-av.com/

  • Pups says:

    Silly question.
Since you don’t want active, real-time protection then you do not need an anti-virus product.
Just keep your OS CDs handy along with recent backups, then format/restore everything once your computer stops working due to severe infections.

  • FLSwampB says:

You can turn off realtime for avira so that it turns into an on demand scanner. But I would suggest you use a-squared free otherwise. It has an even higher detection rate than avira and fits into your requirements.

  • got it says:

AVG Free is the best! Make sure that you don’t have any other Anti virus program installed before you install this one!
I use it on my home computer & all the computers at work! Again … it’s free & works GREAT!!!!!

  • Bullett says:

    Super-anti-spyware professional.

  • kbcying says:

    Kaspersky
    Bit defender
    Norton
    Mcafee
    The best in my opinion

  • sri h says:

    avg 8.5
as they have a lot more finance going into their company

  • rutabuga says:

    avast

  • Daisy <3 [suspended] says:

    AVG without doubt.
